How to Select a Roofing Consultant

While it is possible for building owners and managers to sort through all of the challenges associated with specifying, designing, maintaining, insuring and budgeting their roofing, having a capable, independent roofing consultant on their side is incredibly beneficial.  We’ve noted this in our Article “Why You Should Hire a Roofing Consultant.”

However, since there are few restraints on who can call themselves roofing consultants, building owners should use care in selecting one.  Here are 5 key factors to consider when evaluating roofing consultants.

1. Are they certified?

One of the most important factors to consider is whether or not the consultant is a member of the  International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC). This international, non-profit organization strives "to support professionalism, ethical behavior, education and research in the roofing industry."

IIBEC members that have passed written exams, and proven themselves through character references and professional experience, earn the title of Registered Roof Consultant (RRC).

2. Who does the work?

Many consulting firms that offer roof inspections and assessments simply pass your request to a local "consultant" who often possesses limited expertise and experience.

With Grayco Consulting there are no handoffs.  One experienced and certified roofing consultant leads each assignment from site inspection through final report and can even provide expert ongoing support if needed.

3. Have they done a project of this size and scope before...and can they supply references?

Two of the most important questions you can ask your roof consultant are:

With so many different roofing styles, materials and construction methods, it is ideal to find one with not only expertise with these, but also your geographic area and type of building.

4. What kind of testing, inspections and assessments do they provide?

Unfortunately, many roofing consultants these days rely too heavily on aerial imagery, drone photography, AI and a historical review of weather events to do their assessments.  While helpful, to truly evaluate the condition of a roof, “you need boots on the roof.”

Only by inspecting the roof and using industry-proven tests can you truly generate a comprehensive and accurate assessment of your roof. Learn more about what sets Grayco Consulting apart from other roofing consultants.

5. Can you view a sample of their reporting?

At Grayco Consulting, we pride ourselves on providing "Reports Built for Resolution."  Our findings are supported by field data, annotated photo documentation, moisture mapping and clear, measured analysis - not boilerplate language.

Our goal is for all stakeholders to have a clear understanding of the conditions associated with the project findings, opinions and scope of work.
